Clarity. Discipline. Capability.

Utilities

Modernize core systems without disrupting the customers and grid that depend on them.

Utility transformation has to connect customer, billing, meter, asset and grid systems across many legacy applications, vendors and regulatory obligations, while service continues every day.

01

Conditions that can weaken progress

  • Decades-old, heavily customized systems are tightly coupled to dozens of surrounding applications.
  • Integration and test environments are shared with other major programs, and conflicts stall testing.
  • Several systems integrators and vendors own different pieces, with no single integrated plan.
  • Cutover and data conversion for customer, billing and meter data are not rehearsed enough before go-live.
  • Change freezes and legacy remediation are not governed, so the target keeps moving.
  • Materials, grid equipment and asset planning struggle to keep pace with load growth and long lead times.
  • Security, access and compliance requirements arrive late instead of being built into the plan.
  • Technology milestones advance while business readiness and adoption lag behind.

How Saepius approaches the environment

Saepius starts with the transformation condition and the service the utility must protect. We look at how leadership decisions, governance, integration, cutover readiness and the organization's ability to run the new environment work together, not only whether the technology is configured.

  • Integration, environment and test-cycle coordination across legacy and third-party systems
  • Release, change control and cutover readiness, including mock cutovers and dress rehearsals
  • Coordination across multiple systems integrators and vendors

SAP customer system replacement at a large Western US electric utility

Situation

A large electric utility was replacing its decades-old, heavily customized mainframe customer system with SAP. The program served about 5 million customers. The new platform had to integrate with roughly 45 surrounding legacy and third-party applications, while other major projects competed for the same test environments.

Role

Project and Release Manager, SAP, engaged through a consulting firm. I owned the environment and integration-test timeline across four waves and five integration test cycles. I coordinated three systems integrators and several third-party vendors, and ran release and change control under a program-wide change freeze.

Outcome

Integration testing kept moving despite environment conflicts, through coexistence agreements negotiated with parallel projects. The program went on to a successful go-live.
